Is LLB available as a postgraduate course?

In many countries, the LLB (Bachelor of Laws) is offered as both an undergraduate and postgraduate course. The postgraduate LLB is typically a three-year program designed for students who have already completed a bachelor's degree in any field. This option is common in countries like India, the UK, and Australia, where graduates from non-law backgrounds can pursue an LLB to transition into the legal profession. The course covers foundational legal subjects such as constitutional law, contract law, criminal law, and jurisprudence.

In contrast, some countries offer alternative postgraduate law degrees like the Juris Doctor (JD) instead of an LLB. The JD is common in the United States and Canada, where it serves as the primary law degree for graduates from other disciplines. Upon completion of a postgraduate LLB, students can pursue further specialization with an LLM (Master of Laws) or prepare for legal practice by taking the necessary bar exams or licensing requirements in their respective jurisdictions.
