The apex body responsible for accrediting technical programs in India is the All India Council for Technical Education. AICTE ensures that institutions offering technical courses adhere to established standards and, thereby, maintain the quality and relevance of technical education. Recognition by AICTE, therefore is very important to an institution to offer a nationally and internationally recognized program for its students, thereby facilitating mobility and employability.
However, it should be noted that technical courses conducted by the universities approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) are not required to take AICTE approval. The reason behind this exemption is the judgment of the Supreme Court which states that technical programs can be offered by the UGC-approved universities independently without taking AICTE's accreditation. However, such universities must make sure that their technical courses are on par with AICTE's standards to maintain the quality and credibility of their programs.
