To practice legally students must take a licensing exam after graduating with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy BPT though the requirement varies according to each country specifications. To practice in India new graduates must join both the State Physiotherapy Council under which state they reside and also become members of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP). Physical therapy candidates in the U.S. need to successfully finish the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) which is organized by Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT). Canada together with Australia requires both Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE) and Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) examinations.
These assessment examinations evaluate both theoretical concepts and clinical abilities to test patient care competency. This process demands successful completion of written tests and practical testing sections. After passing the exam one can start practicing as a physiotherapist in any hospital facility and rehabilitation center and private clinic and independent practice setting. BPT graduates need to verify the distinct licensing requirements in their target nation because different countries have different professional practice criteria.
