The ITI Draughtsman (Civil) course enables students to equip themselves with knowledge in civil engineering drafting and designing. Some major topics include technical drawing, as students learn the art of how to draw minute plans and blueprints for building construction. This includes studying about building materials and construction techniques: properties and uses of cement, steel, concrete, etc. There are also critical topics such as surveying, measuring land, mapping, and establishing boundaries with equipment like theodolites and total stations. Structural design introduces students to loading and stability aspects of buildings. Students learn proficiency in AutoCAD and other software for drafting, and estimation and costing prepare budgets for projects to be carried out. Civil engineering fundamentals lay out the concepts: soil mechanics and building codes among others.
The course also involves practical training in the form of workshops and projects to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations. Soft skills, such as communication and teamwork, are often integrated to prepare students for collaborative work environments. The overall aim of the program is to produce skilled draughtsmen who can effectively support civil engineering projects.
