The duration of M.Tech in Civil Engineering generally is two years, which is taken over four semesters. In this postgraduate course, it is intended for students to equip them with deep knowledge and highly specialized skills for various areas under civil engineering, for example, structural engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and water resources.
The syllabus consists of both theoretical as well as practical components, especially research and solving problems in addressing real-world problems in engineering. During the first year, a student mostly attends core and elective classes as well as lab work. In the second year, he/she normally is expected to take on a substantial research project or a thesis whereby students can test concepts they have acquired against real-world problems within the chosen area of interest.
Many institutions offer a part-time or distance learning scheme that will last more than three years. Overall, this course readies students for advanced positions within the civil engineering industry or for academia, teaching them technical savvy and innovative means of solving complex problems.
